As an outdoors writer and radio show host for many years, I have had the opportunity to hunt many fine ranches. Ranger Creek is at the top of my list when it comes to a ‘sure nuff’ Texas hunting destination. For several years, my partner Larry Large and I have offered archery elk hunts in the mountains of northern Colorado. These hunts are action packed and much fun but by mid September, they are over. We found ourselves with plenty of time to work with hunters during the winter months of November through the end of whitetail season.
Through the years, I’ve been invited to hunt Ranger Creek by owner Ranell Walker on many occasions to do magazine and newspaper articles on everything from hunting deer to javelina. I’ve learned the ranch well and when Ranell asked if I would like to take a select few hunters to the ranch this next fall, I jumped at the opportunity. I and my buddy Larry Large love working with hunters and after much thought and planning, we are happy to say we will be offering hunts on what is my favorite Texas hunting destination, Ranger Creek Ranch!
I have my ideas as to what a quality deer hunt should encompass. First, it needs to be good game country and it needs to be relaxed and fun. We can accomplish this at Ranger Creek. Our hunters will stay in the comfortable lodge and be served some excellent meals. The hunts will be 3 full days. Hunters will come in the afternoon prior to the first day of hunting, check their rifle, enjoy good meal and get a good night’s sleep.
The next three days, Large and I will be guiding them in some very game rich country for the opportunity to harvest a mature whitetail buck, doe and hog. We’ll take care of the transportation, field dressing and quartering of the animals.
Ranger Creek is a big, low fenced ranch with truly wild deer. If you are looking for a quick one day ‘guaranteed’ hunt for a 160 class buck, better opt for a high fenced operation. Bucks this big and bigger roam the Cedar Break country but you have to hunt for them and spend your time in the stand. You won’t be deluged in deer aging details here. The first mature buck you choose to shoot is fine with us. This might be a solid 130 inch eight point on the first day of hunt or, a big 160 inch point on day three. If the buck is mature and you like him, shoot!
Cost of the hunt is $2,850. We are offering a limited number of these ‘hands on’ hunts for this coming fall. If you want on the list, contact Luke Clayton at 214-435-1816 or email lukeclayton@prodigy.net
Deer hunting is not all about numbers. Luke is pictured here with a four year old management buck he took this past season with his bow. If you are a rifle hunter and choose to hunt Ranger Creek with Luke and Larry, expect to enjoy a real, old time Texas deer hunt and possibly learn a few tricks that will make you a more successful and HAPPIER deer hunter.
